What is a Margarita and where it started?

The margarita is a type of drink which results from the mix of tequila, triple dry liquor, lemon juice and salt. The way to prepare it requires specific steps to achieve a good mix of flavors.

There are many theories of the origin of this cocktail two of them are:

  1.  In 1938 Carlos Danny Herrera, owner of the restaurant “Rancho La Gloria” in Tijuana, invented the drink in honor of the showgirl and actress Marjorie King. She frequently visited the place, but was allergic to many drinks, except the tequila, so Herrera got down to business and worked to create a cocktail that would match one of her favorite clients.
  2. Another version says that the bartender at the hotel restaurant where the dancer Margarita Carmen Casinos was staying, was impressed with her beauty and decided to create a drink exclusively for her, later this dancer would become the famous actress Rita Hayworth.

In 1977 Jimmy Buffett released a song called “Margaritaville”, this event  popularized the drink.

This cocktail is the most popular one in the USA, on National Margarita Day around 185,000 Margaritas are consumed all around the territory, this day was founded by Todd McCalla around the decades 1930- 1940, with just the purpose to spread his love for Margaritas around the world.

What should you know before preparing a margarita?

It is important to know that there are several tequila liqueurs, where some flavors are stronger than others, so it is important to choose the right tequila to prepare the perfect margarita.

Triple dry liquor is a type of alcoholic drink that has a quite tasty margarita flavor; it comes from the distillation of oranges and helps to improve the level of acidity and sweetness of the cocktail.

On the other hand, we must also talk about lemon juice; you should completely avoid using lemon juice already squeezed since these juices do not have the necessary acidity to achieve the ideal touch for a margarita, it is better to buy soft and fresh lemons so that you can take advantage of that very fresh citrus juice.

How should you prepare it?

Its preparation is quite simple; there are two ways to prepare it: glass or shutter. If you want to prepare a margarita in a glass, you must fill half a glass with tequila, a quarter of triple dry liquor and lastly a quarter of lemon juice. That is to say:

  1. ½ tequila.
  2. ¼ dry liquor.
  3. ¼ lemon juice.

You must mix it very well, and then it is ready to drink. In case you are preparing it in a shutter, you will do it in the same way, but on the edges of the shutter, it is necessary to  put salt,  as this allows opening the taste buds of the mouth.

 Which bottles to choose?

The main flavor of the drink is tequila, that is why we recommend that you choose Don Julio Tequila, it is a fairly soft and low-level distilled drink, it is not expensive , and allows several people to enjoy it, since it is quite refreshing.

For triple dry liquor, you must choose wisely, as a poor choice can harm the flavor experience of a tasty margarita cocktail. We particularly recommend using Grand Marnier or Cointreau triple dry liquor

Mexican Romeo and Juliet

The Callejón del Beso for everyone who comes to Guanajuato, Mexico with her couple is a place that should not be missed. There is a legend that has traveled through time by word of mouth. This legend is about two loved ones: Carmen and Don Carlos.

Carmen was the only daughter of a jealous, strict and violent father who kept her isolated from society. But like every intelligent woman, Carmen from time to time took her getaways. In one of them she met Don Carlos, a humble miner, with whom she saw herself in one of the many churches in Guanajuato near her home, but one day she was discovered by her father, who without much thought locked her up and threatened to send her to a convent and later marry her off to a rich and old Spanish nobleman, who would do the father a favor as he would increase his fortune.  In those days, most maids had a lady-in-waiting as their faithful servant; so Carmen asked her companion to send a letter to Don Carlos in which she warned him about her father’s plans.  Don Carlos, like everyone in love, was thinking about what he had to do. He noticed that one of the windows in Carmen’s house faced a narrow alley.

This one was so narrow that just by leaning out and stretching a little he could well touch the wall of the opposite house. So if he managed to enter the house across the street, he could talk to his beloved from the balconies and then between the two of them they could find a  solution to their problem.

Asking and asking, he found out who the owner of the house was and  bought it for him at a “gold price.” Thus, still locked up and without their father’s knowledge, Carmen and Don Carlos spent long nights talking on the balconies. Until one day the father heard murmurs in the room and found the couple reunited. Enraged and violent as he was, he stabbed a dagger into his daughter’s chest. Faced with the facts, Don Carlos fell silent with horror and only let a tender kiss fall into the hands of his beloved.  A few days later, Don Carlos, unable to bear living without Carmen’s love, launched himself from the main shot of the Mina de la Valenciana.

The legend of El Callejón del Beso tells that if a couple visits this place and kisses each other right on the third step of this alley, they will have happiness for seven long years. But whoever does not do it and passes by the place, will have seven years of very bad luck.  If you go alone and without a partner, don’t worry, no curse will fall on you, but it is recommended that you look for a partner as soon as possible and return to this magical place located in the City of Guanajuato.

“El Callejón del Beso” is barely 69 centimeters wide, the balconies of the two houses in this alley practically touch.
